This year, we have had reason to reflect on how the Muirhead Outreach Project began.
In 2002, a group of hardworking and dedicated family workers opened Cairn Mhor Childcare Partnership. As they began receiving referrals, they noticed a pattern — children were being referred to residential care who could have remained in their own communities if the right support had been available.
Determined to ensure children and families received the best possible service, they decided to establish an outreach project. They searched for a name that would reflect the values they held — a service that was unconditional, reliable and committed to keeping children and families together.
Marian Wilson was an exceptional social worker, deeply committed to caring for children and their families and striving to make life better for them. She and Dorothy, one of Muirhead’s founding members, had worked together in the late seventies and stayed in touch over the years. Marian sadly passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly and, after discussions with her parents, the charity was named the Muirhead Outreach Project in her memory in 2004.
Muirhead was the name of the farm where Marian grew up — a place filled with fond memories, lasting connections and where her strong sense of nurture took root. Marian’s parents were not only happy for the charity to carry the name, but became deeply involved in its work, sitting on the Board and supporting fundraising activities, functions and special occasions throughout the years.
The grounding Marian received at her home of Muirhead was mirrored in the dedication of the Board and staff team who drove the charity forward. Over time, it has become an invaluable service to children and families across Fife and has continued to grow, even when many other charities have struggled.
At the start of this year Douglas, Marian’s brother, got in touch to let us know that his and Marian’s mother, Margretta, had sadly passed away. The family very kindly chose to support Muirhead as part of the collection at Margretta’s service.
Kylie attended the service to represent Muirhead and was deeply moved hearing about Margretta’s almost 97 years and the life she had lived.
A tree with strong roots can withstand storms. With Marian and Margretta’s values forming the foundation of the work that continues today, Muirhead remains grounded, resilient and prepared for whatever the weather may bring.
