Connected Parenting: Rebuilding the Foundation to Family Wellbeing
The 'Foundation Work' was established in 2017, we are proud to be the first local charity to provide comprehensive support to entire families.

Our program spans over 8+ weeks, during which we educate families on emotional intelligence, needs assessment, de-escalation techniques, effective communication, and the importance of routine to strengthen their family connection and improve mental health and well-being.

The Connected Parenting Programme t is a proven, trauma-informed intervention that delivers lasting change for families and communities in Fife’s most deprived areas. With child poverty rates reaching 34.4% in areas like Buckhaven and Methil and 64% of supported families including neurodiverse members, the programme addresses urgent needs through an eight-week foundation course focused on emotional regulation, communication and trauma recovery.

The long-term impact is profound: families report improved mental health, stronger relationships and reduced isolation. Parents gain confidence and resilience, enabling them to better support their children and contribute positively to their communities. Children show increased self-esteem and emotional stability, reducing the need for crisis interventions and long-term social care.

By strengthening families from within, the programme builds community cohesion, reduces generational trauma and fosters a culture of empowerment and hope. It’s not just a parenting course - it’s a catalyst for systemic change, helping families move from surviving to thriving. With referrals doubling since 2019, demand continues to grow and funding is essential to expand this life-changing work.

Parents Group
The parents group is an informal session on a Friday where carers come together for a blether and a cuppa.

This group reduces isolation and improves mental health and well-being, building a strong community and creating connection.

Parent Well-being Sessions
These parent sessions aim to 'fill the parents cup'. They are then more able to support their family.

Play & Art Therapy
We employ a sessional therapist who works with our children and young people.

Counselling
We employ a sessional counsellor for our parents.

Parent Workshops & Guest Services
We have guest services popping in to provide support and information to our families. We also hold occasional workshops which will support learning for families, going forward.

Family Days
Family days give our young people and their grown-ups the chance to have fun and new experiences. They also build connection and reduce isolation.

MOP Comic in partnership with Anim8
Our parents used art, creating a comic, to improve their wellbeing. A link to the full comic will be available soon.

New: Trauma Informed Parenting Collaboration Pilot
Muirhead Outreach Project (MOP) and Trauma Informed Parenting (TIP) complement each other exceptionally well because we share a core mission: supporting families through trauma with compassion, education, and empowerment. For these reasons we are working together on a pilot scheme, to use a joined up approach to support families.

Our pilot project will have:

1. Shared Trauma-Informed Approach
Both MOP and TIP are rooted in trauma-informed principles. We understand that challenging behaviours often stem from trauma and we focus on healing rather than punishment. This shared philosophy creates a seamless partnership.

2. Whole-Family Support
MOP supports entire families, not just individuals, helping them rebuild relationships and improve communication. TIP enhances this by equipping parents with tools to understand and respond to their children's emotional needs, especially during moments of distress or meltdown.

3. Practical, Lived Experience
TIP workshops use real-life examples and relatable strategies. MOP staff and families benefit from this hands-on learning, gaining insights into brain function, emotional regulation and co-regulation techniques that are immediately applicable.

4. Empowerment and Resilience
Both organisations aim to empower families. MOP creates a sense of belonging and achievement, while TIP helps parents feel confident in their ability to support their children. Together, we foster resilience and emotional well-being.

5. Breaking Cycles of Trauma
By combining MOP’s early intervention and relationship-building with TIP’s neuroscience-based parenting strategies, we aim to help families break intergenerational cycles of trauma and build healthier futures.

Family Stem Group
In collaboration with Fife College, our programme offers young people and their families the opportunity to acquire new skills, have fun and have a feeling of achievement. This initiative is particularly beneficial for individuals who have disengaged from school, demonstrating that education can be both enjoyable and practical.

The family STEM group was a pilot scheme. We hope to extend this project in the future.

Teen Art Wellbeing Group
The Art Well-being Group provides young people with a valuable opportunity to express their emotions creatively while fostering meaningful connections with their peers and support workers. Here they benefit from peer-to-peer support, have a useful tool for managing emotions and feel less lonely.

Caravan
Once families have completed the CPR work, the caravan becomes available for short breaks. This helps the families relax and connect. Some families would not be able afford a short break, without access to this caravan.

Mop Pop ups
These are our get togethers during the holidays, where families can play, relax and connect. We also have Pop Up information stands at events in the community.

Rainbow Run
Our annual event which encourages fun, community and exercise outdoors. This is in partnership with Gilvenbank Community Sports Hub

Sleep Training
Our Support worker, Kris, has trained with Sleep Action (formerly Sleep Scotland), enabling us to support our families with their bedtime routine and sleep issues, which often have a negative impact on their mental health.

MsMissMrs
With strong self-esteem and positive well-being, women can take on life’s challenges with resilience. That’s why we’ve made it our mission to empower girls and women!

Our support workers are trained to help young women feel more confident and empowered through this initiative: Get S.E.T Girls, which supports girls aged 10-16 to understand their worth and realise their potential.
